CiviKey is a free, open-source assistive technology software suite designed to empower individuals with physical and motor disabilities to easily use computers. Originally developed as Custom Virtual Keyboard (CVK) by the French computer science school IN’TECH, the project was renamed to CiviKey in 2010 when development was taken over by the IT firm Invenietis.
Built in close collaboration with occupational therapists, the software bridges the gap between hardware restrictions and digital interaction. Core Features
CiviKey alters how a user interacts with the standard Windows operating system through three core mechanisms:
Effortless Mouse Pointing: It integrates a unique mouse-pointing method based on a visual scrolling matrix. When paired with an automatic click system, it drastically minimizes physical strain and fatigue.
Universal Switch Scanning: The system can map all mouse movements and clicks to a single hardware switch or button. This makes computer navigation highly accessible for individuals with severe motor limitations, such as tetraplegia.
Custom Virtual Keyboard: The interface features a highly adaptive on-screen keyboard. It supports multiple languages (including Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, and Chinese characters) and features programmable keys to launch applications, open specific files, or execute multi-key macro shortcuts (like Ctrl + C or Ctrl + V) in a single click. Smart Word Prediction
To speed up typing and limit physical exhaustion, CiviKey utilizes the Sybille word-prediction engine. This tool suggests words dynamically as the user types, drastically reducing the total number of physical actions or switch triggers required to complete a sentence. Tailored Interfaces
Because physical disabilities vary greatly from person to person, CiviKey features a robust interface editor. Occupational therapists and users can modify the size, color, opacity, and layout of the keys to accommodate specific visual or motor restrictions. Users can also download pre-configured layouts from an open-source library built by the CiviKey Community. Development and Ecosystem
