HGT files (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Height data) contain highly specific 3D digital elevation models used in geographic information systems (GIS). Because they lack embedded metadata and rely strictly on their file names for coordinates (e.g., N19W157.hgt), standard image or text viewers cannot interpret them.
